Why do bed bugs come back after spraying?
Bed bugs don’t behave like a pest that turns up in one corner and moves on. They live right next to you, in the bed you sleep in and the sofa you sit on, and they come out at night while you’re asleep. A single female lays hundreds of eggs in her lifetime and tucks them into places that are hard to reach: inside mattress seams, in the joints of wooden beds, behind picture frames. How many visits does it take to get rid of bed bugs for good?
Most homes need two visits, about two weeks apart. The first kills the bugs that are there now, and the second catches the ones that hatch from eggs before they grow up and lay more. Very large infestations, or hotels, may need a third visit, and you'll hear that at the first inspection before you pay anything.
Can I get rid of bed bugs myself with a regular spray?
You can cut their numbers, but getting rid of them is hard. Supermarket sprays kill the bugs they touch, but they don't reach deep into cracks and don't affect the eggs. Heavy spraying without a plan also pushes bed bugs into other rooms, so the infestation spreads instead of ending.
Do I have to throw out my mattress or bed?
In most cases, no. Mattresses and beds can be treated, and the technician will tell you if something really is in bad shape. Throwing furniture out untreated can drop bed bugs on the stairs and in the flats next door, and the bugs stay in the rest of your home anyway.
