About wood borers

Why do wood borers and termites come back after treatment?

With wood borers and termites, the damage happens inside the wood, which is why people tend to leave them too long. You see a hole or a line of mud on the wall, and the rest stays hidden. Anything done only from the outside buys a little time, then the problem turns up somewhere else.

What you can see is the last stage

A round hole in a chair means a beetle grew up inside the wood and left. Before that, it spent months in there as a larva, sometimes longer, eating and tunnelling. Once out, the beetles can lay eggs on the same piece or the one beside it. By the time you see holes, there’s usually another generation inside.

Painting and wiping from outside doesn’t reach them

A lot of people brush the wood with kerosene or varnish, or wipe it down with insecticide. That stays on the surface, and the larva deep inside doesn’t notice a thing. Kerosene and petrol are the worst of these, because they make furniture and floors highly flammable. What actually reaches the larvae is injection into the holes and tunnels, since the product travels along the same paths the larva made.

Termites live underground

Termites don’t live in the door they’re eating. The colony is in the soil under or beside the house, and workers reach the wood through mud tubes that shield them from light and dry air. Spray the door or replace it, and the colony is still there. It will find other wood, like the skirting boards or cardboard boxes stored on the basement floor. That’s why termite treatment has to reach the soil and the foundations, not only the wood.

Damp draws them in

Wood by a leaking bathroom, a damp wall or a floor mopped with lots of water is easier for both pests to get into. Treat the wood but leave the damp, and they’re more likely to come back. The technician will point out any damp he spotted, and fixing it is part of the instructions your guarantee depends on.

People rarely think about the other way in: wood that’s new to the house. A second-hand sofa from a market, or timber stored for years, can carry borer larvae with no sign outside. The holes appear months later, by which time the borers may have moved into nearby pieces. Buying an old piece? Check underneath for holes and dust before it comes home.

The order we work in

First we identify the pest. Then we get the product to where it lives: inside the wood for borers, the soil for termites. We mark the holes so any new activity is easy to spot. For the full difference, with photos, see our article on it.

The Formax method

How we treat wood borers and termites

  1. 1

An inspection that identifies the pest first

The technician checks the shape of the holes and the type of dust, looks for mud tubes near floors and walls, and taps the wood. If it's still unclear, he takes a sample. A wrong diagnosis means the wrong treatment.

  2. 2

A written plan for every piece

We write down the pieces and areas to be treated, whether furniture is treated in place, the number of visits and the final price. With antiques and expensive wood, we tell you upfront if there's any risk to the finish.

  3. 3

    Injection into the holes

We inject a registered product into the exit holes and tunnels so it reaches the larvae inside the wood. Wiping the wood from the outside can't do that.

  4. 4

    Treating the wood surface

After injecting, we spray or brush the exposed wood, such as wardrobe backs, chair undersides and skirting boards. Beetles that emerge later then can't lay eggs on the same piece.

  5. 5

Soil and foundation treatment for termites

With termites, the colony itself is in the ground. We treat the soil around the foundations and the points where they enter the building, and break up their mud tubes so they can't find a way back to the wood.

  6. 6

    Follow-up and a written guarantee

We mark the old holes so we can tell if a new one appears. We send you the after-treatment instructions on WhatsApp and follow up every 3 months.

Safety

Safe for your children and pets while we treat wood borers

Before any spraying you know which product we use, how long to stay out and when to come back. Nothing is left to be explained after we finish.

  • No kerosene or petrol on the wood

Kerosene and petrol make wood dangerously flammable, and they don't reach the larvae deep inside anyway. If you've already used either, tell us before the visit.

  • Empty wardrobes and kitchen cupboards

If an affected cupboard holds clothes, food or dishes, empty it before treatment, and don't put anything back until the technician says so.

  • Registered products for home use

We use products approved for homes and apply them inside the wood and on surfaces that aren't touched every day. Keep children and pets away from treated pieces until they dry.

Prices

How much will it cost?

Wood borer treatment is priced by the number and type of affected pieces: one chair is a different job from a bedroom set or a parquet floor. Termite work depends on how much of the foundations needs treating. Send photos of the holes, dust or mud tubes on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what it is, with an initial price. Our team answers calls and WhatsApp messages in Arabic and English.

01

Type of pest

Bed bugs need two visits, cockroaches need gel and follow-up, rodents need bait stations. Each pest has its own work.

02

Size of the place

A 90 m² flat is not a villa with a garden. The price follows the area that needs treatment.

03

How bad it is

If it has only just started, there is less work. If it has spread to several rooms, the plan grows.

04

Type of property

A home is not a restaurant or a warehouse. Commercial sites have periodic contracts with different pricing.

Send the type of pest (or a photo), the place and its approximate size, and we will reply with an initial price. The final price is confirmed after the inspection and before we start.

A 5-year guarantee in writing, not just words

A 5-year guarantee on the service, written on a certificate you receive at the end of the visit. If the pest comes back at any point during that period, one WhatsApp message and we come back.

  1. 1 The guarantee is written on a certificate you receive with the invoice, stating the pest and the guarantee period.
  2. 2 If the pest comes back within the guarantee period, the follow-up visit is free, no arguments.
  3. 3 The guarantee stays valid as long as you follow the technician’s after-treatment instructions (we send them to you in writing on WhatsApp).

Common questions

Questions about termites & wood borers

What's the difference between wood borers and termites?

Wood borers are beetles whose larvae live inside the wood, leave through small round holes and drop fine dust. Termites live in a colony in the soil, reach wood through mud tubes and hollow it out without obvious holes. The signs differ and so does the treatment, which is why we inspect first.

How does termite control work in an Egyptian home?

Termite control in Egypt starts with finding the mud tubes and working out how the termites are getting in. Then we treat the soil around the foundations, the entry points and the damaged wood. Spraying the wood alone fails because the colony in the ground keeps sending new workers. A large infestation needs follow-up until activity stops.

Do kerosene or petrol kill wood borers?

No, and they're genuinely dangerous. Both soak into the wood, make it highly flammable inside your home and leave a lasting smell. They also evaporate off the surface before reaching the larvae deep inside, so the borers carry on. Injecting a registered product reaches the tunnels without that risk.

Do I have to throw out furniture with woodworm?

Usually not. A piece that's still solid can be treated where it stands, with injection and surface treatment. If the wood is so eaten that it's genuinely weak, like a chair leg about to snap, we'll tell you to replace that part. Throwing one piece out achieves little if the borers have already spread to others.

Will wood borer treatment damage the paintwork or antiques?

Usually not, because the injection goes into the holes themselves. Some finishes are delicate, like gilded carving or old varnish, so we check those before we start and test a hidden spot if needed. If there's any risk to the finish, you hear about it from us before the work, not after.

I'm still finding dust after treatment. Is that normal?

Yes, for the first few days. Old dust trapped in the tunnels can keep falling out, so the technician marks the existing holes and asks you to clean up. If a new round hole or fresh dust shows up a few weeks later, send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll come and look.

Does the guarantee cover wood borers and termites?

Yes. The guarantee is a written certificate that comes with the invoice and lists the pest, the duration and the pieces or areas treated. If the infestation comes back there during the guarantee period, we treat it again free of charge, provided you follow the instructions we send on WhatsApp, such as not letting damp sit on the wood.
